Most three-day Phuket plans are written by people who have never driven it. They will happily send you to Old Town in the morning and a southern beach for sunset, which looks fine on a map and costs you two hours in the car. Phuket is around 50 km top to bottom with one busy road down the middle, and the difference between a good plan and a bad one is almost entirely about grouping.
This is the order we actually drive when guests give us three days and ask us to sort it out.
Day 1 — the south: beaches, then the Promthep sunset
Start slow, especially if you landed the night before. The southern beaches are close to each other, so you can move between two or three of them without it feeling like travelling, then finish at the cape for sunset.
- Late morning — Kata or Karon for the first swim. Long, open sand and easy parking.
- Lunch — a beachfront place rather than a scheduled restaurant. This is the day to be lazy.
- Afternoon — Nai Harn, the calmest water in the south, or Rawai if you would rather eat seafood than swim.
- Sunset — Promthep Cape. The classic Phuket view, and the one photo everyone comes home with.
Day 2 — Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island
This is the full day, and the one worth protecting. You leave Phuket, drive north to the pier and go out among the limestone karsts — sea caves, the island from the film, and usually a stop where you can get in the water. Back late afternoon.
Start early. The bay is at its best before the middle of the day, both for light and for how many other boats are in the same cave as you. An early start is the single biggest difference between a good Phang Nga day and an average one.
Day 3 — Big Buddha, the viewpoints and Old Town
A land day, and a good one to finish on because it ends in town rather than an hour from your hotel. Big Buddha in the morning while it is still cool, the west-coast viewpoints on the way across, then Old Town for the afternoon.
Old Town is the part of Phuket most visitors skip and then regret skipping — Sino-Portuguese shophouses, proper coffee, and the best food on the island that is not on a beach. Give it three hours rather than one.
How much of this is driving?
Less than you would think, if the days are grouped like this. Day 1 keeps you inside the southern tip. Day 3 is one crossing plus stops along the way. Day 2 is the long one, and most of it is on a boat rather than in a car.
Real drive times swing a lot with the season and the time of day — the same trip can take 30 minutes or an hour depending on when you set off. That is exactly the sort of thing we plan around once we know where you are staying.
Doing it with a driver
This plan is built to be driven. Your bags, water and shopping stay in the car all day. You leave each place when you have finished with it rather than when something else is departing. If it rains at Kata you go to Old Town early and come back tomorrow, and nobody has to renegotiate anything.
Day 2 runs as a set day trip because the boat has to be arranged around it. Days 1 and 3 work best as hourly charter — you take the car and driver for the day and we shape the route around what you actually feel like doing when you wake up.

What you will not have time for is a second island trip, so pick one boat day and do it properly.
What is the best order to do Phuket in 3 days?＋
Group by geography, not by interest. Spend one day entirely in the south, one day on the Phang Nga Bay trip, and one day crossing from Big Buddha to Old Town. Doing it in this order means you cross the island once rather than three times.
How far in advance should I plan a 3-day Phuket itinerary?＋
Fix your boat day as soon as you know your dates, especially in high season — it is the part with the least flexibility. The land days can be arranged closer to your trip, though booking a driver at least 24 hours ahead means you get the vehicle size you want.
Can we change the plan once we arrive?＋
The land days, yes — that is the advantage of having your own driver rather than a fixed schedule. If the weather turns or you simply want a slower morning, we reshape the day as we go. The boat day is the one that needs to stay where it is.
